New DVDs - New York Times
A remake of 3:10 to Yuma with Christian Bale (and Russell Crowe...meh) releases September 7th. Just in time, Sony Pictures is rereleasing the original 1957 western in a widescreen transfer. I'm loving this resurgence of westerns-done-right. Lets hope it follows the follows the footsteps of The Proposition, Unforgiven, and even Open Range (a surprisingly great one). Next to come are the Cohen Brothers' No Country for Old Men -- which I'll consider a western -- and the one I'm most looking forward to, PT Anderson's There Will Be Blood. It's gonna be a good year for the showdown.
First things first...if Bale was not in this film, you would not be as stoked. I will need to be convinced that this film has an opportunity to sit in the ranks of modern westerns such as The Proposition and other well made period peices.
I am worried that Crowe will only bring the same character he always is to this film. He will be Maximus duel-wielding six shooters. However, the simple fact that his character is not a hopeful, romantic hero that most people can relate to hold my interest. He does play a sadistic killer. That is a change. Although I am not a fan of watching originals directly before watching a remake to compare, I do feel inclined to watch the original to see how it fits in the big picture. What do you think?

Well, to be honest it was really just the trailer for 3:10 that got me excited. I think Christian Bale is great, but I definitely wouldn't jump on the wagon for this movie based only on one cast. Equilibrium sucks.
I am skeptical about Crowe, but the trailer at least promises that it'll be a good action-western. Definitely not film-making on par with Proposition, but I think I'll have a damn good time watching that final gun brawl.
If the new 3:10 gets good reviews, I'll see it first. If not, I'll wait for that DVD release.
The reviews are coming in now. Looks like it will be more than a formulaic hollywood popcorn muncher. I hate the influence critics have on my expectations. Oh well....
100% with 8 reviews. Not bad so far. And what a poster! It's confirmed… red is not funny.
