October 2007 Archives

Why have I not already seen this? Sleevage is a blog about music cover art and packaging. I'm glad they take an extra step to provide some background on the pieces. This could be a great resource over time.
Over 400 large Blue Note album covers for $17. In a book. Good deal. If not, this might hold you over.
Speaking of Neutraface, how about these beautiful house numbers?
Nice information design on Beef. From Speakup.
House Industries has released an update to the classic type-family Neutraface, appropriately called Neutraface No. 2. A little less deco, a little more modern. A nice alternative to the increasingly common Gotham, and the expected Futura.
James Bond is going postal in England (sorry, couldn't help it), being the next to be commemorated with these wonderful original book covers on the nation's mailing stamps. First the Beatles, now this. I predict Radiohead stamps are next.
Slate on the joy of footbridges and "walking on air". It includes Chicago's BP Bridge at Millennium Park.
With the new Leopard OS and Gmail allowing SMTP, I'm trying to get back in the swing of using the Apple Mail desktop client and good ol' address book to keep things more organized. Gmail has been acting kind of strange lately with a lot of delay and sometimes completely stalling out when sending a message.

There are a few things I will miss about the web Gmail interface, but the number one thing I would have a hard time living without are the "conversations" view when following threads of an email topic. Well I found that Apple Mail has actually had threaded views for a long time, they're just a little hidden. It isn't quite as nice as Gmail's version, but the rest of Mail makes up for it.
Next week's Layer Tennis is gonna be top. Marian Bantjes vs. Armin Vit. Bantjes is gonna whip him with those curves.
Thank you, thank you Google. Gmail finally has IMAP. Back to Apple Mail for me. (Read third paragraph for why IMAP is a good thing, and what it does.)
Here is my new music video project completed. It is Radiohead's "All I Need" from the new album In Rainbows, using footage from the 1996 French film Microcosmos. Hope you enjoy.

That's not a TV remote… this is a TV Remote.
Here's a nice essay on the mysterious cover for Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures". It sounds cheesy, but I do remember the moment I saw this album in a record store my freshman year of college. Just stepping out of a heavy Yes obsession, and stepping knee deep in Warp record's back catalogs, I had never heard of Joy Division. But the second I saw the cover, I remember desperately wanting to hear whatever sounds it protected so intensely.
"The attached report shares everything we learned. We offer it freely to this community that has given us so much." A List Apart's 2007 Web Design Survey available for download. Bar graph heaven.
Apple's latest iteration of OS X, called Leopard, is finally releasing October 26. Here are about 300 reasons why I am excited.
Testing this.
This has to be the headline of the day: "Cola Wars Get Physical as Pepsi Worker Attacks Coke Employee" From TMN
"There are three great cities in the United States: there's Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York – in that order." I'm not sure about that (I am biased), but BLDGBLOG wrote a poem/rant about Los Angeles that makes me really want to visit the place. Shout-out to my friends out there right now.
Chicago in 3D with awful techno music. The video is nice though. From GB.
Aside from some busy weeks back at work after my vacation, my absence here has only this as an excuse:

Lots of Halo 3. Embarrassingly, through this great trailer I discovered how awesome Chopin is. I probably won't share that with anyone ever again. Here's the song in case you want to download.

What a great calendar
